Gun Violence in America is a series of seventeen three-dimensional mixed-media collages (assemblages) examining the many ways firearms impact American life. Over a period of two years, I researched each topic, created the collages from found objects, and assembled the accompanying facts and examples of efforts underway to reduce gun violence.
Each collage is followed by two sections. The first presents selected facts that help place the artwork in context. The second highlights examples of initiatives, programs, legislation, and community efforts that seek to reduce gun violence. These lists are not intended to be comprehensive; they are intended to provide a starting point for further exploration.
Viewer advisory: This series addresses suicide, school shootings, domestic violence, violence involving children, and other forms of gun violence. Some images and subject matter may bring back painful memories for people who have experienced gun violence or other trauma. Please decide for yourself whether viewing the series is right for you.
Although the collages confront the consequences of gun violence, this project is ultimately about prevention. Each collage is accompanied by facts and possible solutions—steps already being taken, or that could be taken, to reduce gun violence and the devastation it leaves behind.
This exhibition asks viewers to look, to reflect, and to consider the many ways gun violence affects individuals, families, and communities across America.
