Possible Solutions Underway
Timely and accurate data on LGBTQ+ hate crimes are essential to understanding and preventing these crimes. Strengthen gun law protections, including:
- Enact Disarm Hate legislation to prevent individuals convicted of hate-motivated offenses—even misdemeanors—from legally possessing firearms. —Giffords
- Support federal versions like the Disarm Hate Act (H.R. 5435 / S. 2776) and, at the state level, replicate efforts already in states like California, New York, and Florida. —Giffords
- Expand common-sense gun reforms: universal background checks, limits on assault weapons and high-capacity magazines, safe-storage rules, and Extreme Risk (“red flag”) laws. —Everytown
- Advocate for policy reform—contact elected officials to support federal and state legislation like the Disarm Hate Act and safe-storage requirements.
